GAMSTOP is the national self-exclusion program for online gambling that is free and independent. Today, GAMSTOP revealed that 84,000 people registered in 2022. This record number marks the highest annual registration since April 2018.
Since GAMSTOP launched, 341,365 people have decided to exclude themselves from online gambling sites. This is a rise of 5% over the 6 months and 6% for the entire 12 months.
Self-exclusion is becoming an increasingly important tool for those who are having problems with gambling.
Nearly 1 in 4 (24%) users have self-excluded for at least one year within the past six months. 48% registered for a five-year exclusion, which is the longest possible time period. GAMSTOP users are still enrolled in the program after their exclusion ends, unless they request to be taken out.
In 2022, the service was used by all age groups. More than 40% were aged between 25 and 34; nearly one-fourth of those aged 35 to 44; and almost one-fifth of those aged 18-24. The majority of users are male. However, in August 2022 34% of all new signatories were women – the highest number last year.
Annual data since 2018 has shown a seasonal pattern in registrations, with women and men registering more often during winter months. This trend changed during the second quarter 2022. The July 1 saw 371 new registrations.
Fiona Palmer, GAMSTOP CEO stated that while we cannot pinpoint a single factor responsible for the increase in registrations at GAMSTOP’s website, it is possible that the economic climate and affordability of living expenses have influenced people’s decisions about their lifestyles, and spending. We saw more than 81,000 new registrations in 2022, which is a positive sign that we are moving closer to helping more people. Jack Scott, 27, a Stone resident and a recovering gambler, registered with GAMSTOP when his gambling addiction spiraled out of control. Jack lost 75% of his monthly wage as a steel worker to gambling sites. However, he was able to overcome his problems after two years of self exclusion. Jack discovered an interest in professional ultramarathon running, and recently placed second in The Montane Spine long distance race.
Jack stated that he was “literally just bouncing from one week to the next without any purpose.” I couldn’t see who I was when I looked in the mirror. Although it’s hard to believe now, there were times when I believed that this was the person I would be for the rest my life. I didn’t see any way out. GAMSTOP was 2 years ago, when I stopped gambling and registered with GAMSTOP. My running has improved tremendously since then.
GAMSTOP will be attending the International Casinos Exhibition, (ICE), as an exhibitor in the Consumer Protection Zone. It will take place at ExCel London on the 9th of February 2023. The CPZ has been a key player in promoting safer gambling practices over the past five years.
