These are my top tips for how to effectively network at events and turn the conversations that you start into business leads.


Listen and pay attention

The art of networking is a secret that’s best kept. It’s not about talking, but rather listening. Listening and zoning in can be the best way to build meaningful connections and network.

By listening, you learn a lot. You may discover something about their company or themselves that you could use to connect with them, or as a hook in a follow-up after the event. If a potential client tells you about an exciting event or holiday, it could be a good conversation starter to ask them how the event went. You can do it as simply as that.

Listening to someone can help you get to know them better and allow you ask thoughtful questions when the time is right. In the business world, paying attention to what’s being said can go a long way!


Shared interests

I encourage my co-workers to form connections based on common interests, goals and values. Conversations naturally shift from business to other subjects when speaking face-to-face, such as politics, the economy, and hobbies. When you share interests with others, you can develop genuine relationships and connections.

Consistency also matters. Show that you care about your network by regularly contacting them and showing that these relationships are more than just transactional moments.


Playing the long game

Networking is considered successful only if a lead is immediately generated. This is often not the case.

It takes commitment to build a network. Consistent effort will produce long-term benefits. Hard selling is rarely effective, and authenticity is what makes networking successful.

Be present. Give your business card to the other person at the end and follow-up within 48 hours.


Never say goodbye in a firm way

The purpose of conferences and events is to create professional networks that will last well after the venue has closed. Over the years, I’ve learned that just because a conversation is unlikely to result in a sale does not mean that you should stop talking to that person.

We see it all the time in the iGaming Affiliate Marketing sector. People can move quickly from one job to another, giving them access to new opportunities. We should also remember that someone who has enjoyed a particular conversation may be able to introduce you to broader networks.

When networking, it is important to consider the bigger picture. Follow up with anyone you spoke to at the event. Maintaining long-term relationships could lead to new opportunities in the future.

If approached correctly, networking in person can yield significant results. A long-term plan is necessary to build a relationship that will last. To build meaningful relationships, it is important to listen, identify shared interests and be authentic.
